The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is proposing new rules to tighten ammonia standards that were last revised in 1999.
The proposal is based on a 2013 Environmental Protection Agency recommendation on stricter ammonia limits showing some aquatic life is more sensitive to the chemical compound than previously thought.
Missouri regulators intend to calculate limits via region-specific standards.
