Missouri makes top 10 list of most miserable states

Posted online
Despite the recent "Missouri is Awesome" campaign, it seems many residents aren't as keen on living in the Show-Me State.

The recent Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index ranked Missouri as the No. 8 most miserable state in America, up five spots from No. 13 last year, according to a Kansas City Star report.

Based on more than 178,000 interviews with Americans across all 50 states, conducted from January to December of last year, Missouri's figures could be cause for concern. A relatively low number reported having smiled or laughed within the last day and high numbers say they were experiencing stress.

The Star reports Missouri also had the 14th highest obesity rate, the 11th lowest life expectancy and the 14th lowest median income of the U.S.

North Dakota topped the list as least miserable, while West Virginia bottomed out the list for the second consecutive year.
