Missouri drivers face changes in license laws

Posted online
Missouri residents who need to renew their state driver’s licenses may find they need to change their license numbers.

Show-Me state drivers are no longer able to use their Social Security numbers as the number on their driver’s licenses. The changes, which took effect Dec. 19, are the result of a federal law that prohibits motor vehicle departments from issuing licenses, permits or ID cards that use Social Security numbers.

Under the new system, randomly generated license numbers will be assigned to all new applicants and renewal or duplicate applicants who currently use their Social Security number as their license numbers.

The change is one of many that have been implemented in Missouri since July 2005, when the state’s Show Me Proof initiative went into effect. The law requires new license applicants, as well as those seeking license renewals, to present three documents: proof of lawful presence, such as a birth certificate or valid passport; proof of identity, such as a Social Security card; and proof of residency, such as the most recent utility bill or voter registration card.

A complete list of requirements and approved documents can be found at the Missouri Department of Revenue Web site, www.dor.mo.gov.
