In Missouri, the average duration for which unemployment benefits were claimed was 14.5 weeks in the third quarter of 2006, down from 15.5 weeks for the same quarter in 2005. The national average for third-quarter 2006 was 15.5 weeks.
According to a DOLIR news release, the department has seen a 7 percent decrease in weekly claims in the last 12 months, although the number of initial claims filed in January was up to 51,322 from 40,437 in January 2006. The number of weekly claims that same month also was up to 291,429 from 276,120 for the same month in 2006.
DOLIR is responsible for providing unemployment benefits to workers who lose their job through no fault of their own, and eligible individuals may qualify for up to 26 weeks of unemployment compensation.[[In-content Ad]]
