A majority of the members of the Minneapolis City Council yesterday announced plans to disband the city's police department.
Council member Jeremiah Ellison promised to "dismantle" the department. Council President Lisa Bender pledged "to end policing as we know it and recreate systems that actually keep us safe.”
The killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis officers has sparked nationwide protests and calls for police reform.
