Mining deaths drop to lowest level in history

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration yesterday reported fiscal 2016 was the safest year in mining history.

For the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 24 people died at more than 13,000 mines nationwide, the lowest total since 34 in fiscal 2013.

The latest count was down from 38 in fiscal 2015.
