Midwestern wages, salaries grow in September

Wages and salaries in the Midwest increased 2.9 percent in September, according to the latest Employment Cost Index report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall, total compensation costs for Midwestern private industry workers rose 2.2 percent. The September 2006 increase was 2.8 percent. Compensation costs include wages, salaries and employer costs for employee benefits.

The Midwest’s wage and salary increase and compensation growth were the lowest among all regions. The Northeast experienced the most improvement, with a 3.5 percent increase in wages and salaries and a 3.6 percent increase in total compensation.

The United States, meanwhile, saw compensation costs rise 3.1 percent for the year ended in September, and wages and salaries increased 3.4 percent compared to 3 percent a year ago.
