Midwest Consumer Price Index up 1% in May

Posted online
The Consumer Price Index for the Midwest climbed nearly 1 percent in May – a gain attributed almost entirely to soaring energy prices.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the index grew 0.9 percent in May, following a 0.8 percent increase in April and 4 percent higher than May 2007.

Energy prices, which include motor and household fuels, skyrocketed 7.7 percent for the month, after a 5.2 percent increase in April. Energy prices have grown 15.4 percent since May 2007, led by rising motor fuel costs.

Without accounting for food and energy costs, the index was nearly unchanged for the month and was up 2.2 percent for the year.

The Midwest CPI for All Urban Consumers was 207.17 in May, which means a typical market basket of goods that cost $100 in 1982-84 cost $207.17 in May.
