Nowadays, most people want to live in a real community, a true neighborhood. I asked some Midtown residents, whose neighborhood is thriving, "What makes a real community?"
Caring and a sense of history in Midtown attracted Jerry Haden, who adds to the flavor of Midtown with his vintage cars and musical talent.
"It is a place where your neighbors have a real concern about you and your needs," he said.
Knowing your neighbors tops Mary Ellen Collins' list, too. "On your front porch you wave and talk to your neighbors. Such a variety of personalities. Children stop and visit, and if you get in the mood to cook, your neighbors smell the food and invite themselves over."
She added, "The instinct to preserve is a part of you, if you have the nerve to take on an old dwelling."
