Microsoft, Amazon working with Google, Netflix to boost video streaming

Microsoft and Amazon have partnered with a host of other tech companies, including Google, Intel, Cisco and Netflix, to make it easier to watch video on your smartphone or tablet.

Via the Alliance for Open Media, the companies plan to develop open, royalty-free technology for use on any smartphone or tablet, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

The teamwork would allow the companies to avoid expensive patent-licensing disputes over the next-generation video compression technology, often referred to as roadblocks to innovation.
