Mercy Springfield Communities is scheduled to break ground next week on a $28 million rehabilitation center in southeast Springfield.
Officials have set an April 2 groundbreaking date on the 63,000-square-foot Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital Springfield, according to a news release.
Operating as a partnership between Mercy and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Centerre Healthcare, the hospital would include 60 beds and provide inpatient rehab services for patients recovering from strokes, brain or spinal cord injuries, amputations and severe orthopedic injuries.
The facility would replace services currently offered at Mercy Hospital Springfield, where officials say needs have outgrown the 35-bed space.
Construction of the facility is expected to take about a year. The hospital property is just north of Evans Road and west of Highway 65 on 120 acres it shares with the $116 million, 200,000-square-foot Mercy Orthopedic Hospital currently under construction.
