A century ago, it was considered the height of fashion for the ladies to show a bit of ankle. Now, it’s the guys’ turn.
Last year, according to Bloomberg Businessweek, socks sales outperformed all other men’s clothing segments, to the tune of $2.8 billion. That’s roughly $25 per male older than 14, a 14 percent increase over 2012.
And they’re not buying pants-matching grey or navy socks, either. The trend is for “statement socks” with loud, attention-grabbing patterns that clash with still-conservative suits. Or, if you’re a particularly spendy trendy, try on a pair of $1,500 socks made of fur from the New Zealand red deer.
