Meet Pat Lloyd

Age: 58

Career: Lloyd spent two years directing the Nebraska State Fair and 20 years directing the Tulsa State Fair.

Responsibilities: “The annual Ozark Empire Fair is the signature event we produce each year. In addition to that, there are a number of off-season events and activities that we both host and produce throughout the year,” Lloyd said, citing the annual Farm Fest and The Lawn & Garden Show, livestock events and various car, boat, antique and craft shows. “On almost any given weekend through the year there is some kind of event being held out at the fairgrounds.”

How this fair differs: “Every fair, regardless of its geographic location, has the same basic components, however there are a number of differences as it relates to their actual production. … My sense is that residents of Springfield and Greene County … are very enthusiastic and supportive, not only of the annual Ozark Empire Fair, but the other off-season events as well. I’ve noted a great deal of community support, and that causes this operation … to stand out among its peers. … And that’s not the case with all fairs,” he said.

Goals: “I’m going to be spending a lot of time observing the component parts of our fair, everything from the livestock area, to competitive exhibits, to the carnival operation, to our independent concessionaires. … I want to see how all those fit together. Is there a way to do them even better?”

“Agriculture has been and will remain a very strong part of our local and state economy. We need to continue to focus on that. The Gold Buckle Gala is an example of us showcasing that kind of activity. We want to continue to do that, being mindful that we need to showcase elements of the agricultural story (that) folks might not be aware of, such as agricultural science in such areas as crop genetics, the whole animal embryo area – showcase those technological aspects of agriculture that likely a number of people are not aware of.”

Lloyd also is considering adding themed festivals, such as ethnic or children’s fests, within the framework of the 10-day fair. “Not only does that attract individuals from that group, that culture, it also brings other folks out to enjoy that and learn something about their neighbors here in southwestern Missouri.”

Hobbies: “Bass fishing is my passion.”

Family: Lloyd is married to Terri and they have three children: Brian is a Tulsa fireman, Jennifer is studying at Northwestern Arkansas Community College and 11-year-old Josh attends Willard schools. The Lloyds recently bought a home in Willard.
