Every year across the country, seniors have the opportunity to make changes to their Medicare benefits during Annual Enrollment, October 15-December 7. During this very short window of time, Medical Benefits Group, Inc. will handle thousands of applications from seniors in southwest Missouri, northern Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma who are looking to change or enroll in a Medicare-related health insurance plan.

“There is no question that Annual Enrollment is our busiest time of the year,” said Richard Wu, senior benefits specialist at Medical Benefits Group, Nixa. “Yet we keep our focus on each client because every one of them has a different need or concern.

“As a specialist in senior health benefits, we help our seniors identify what specific programs are best suited to their needs and then provide them service all year long as needed,” he added.

According to Wu, one benefit of being an independent insurance specialist is access to all the insurance plans in the market. “A key difference between an independent specialist at Medical Benefits Group and someone who works directly for an insurance company is that we can help the client sort through all the plans and identify what will work best for them without any allegiance to one specific plan.”

In Greene County, about 39 percent of the senior population is enrolled in a Medicare Advantage, plan – a higher percentage than the national average. “We are fortunate to have a number of plans to choose from that have low or no additional monthly premiums in addition to their Medicare Part B premium, yet provide them with more services and protection than original Medicare,” explained Jeremy Norris, senior benefits specialist for Medical Benefits Group. “It’s unfortunate that many seniors still don’t have the protection of an Advantage or supplement plan – often not realizing they are responsible for 20 percent of all their medical needs with original Medicare alone.”

Norris, who specializes in helping lower income seniors with services related to Medicaid, Missouri RX, and other state,  local and federal programs, says confusion over what Medicare does and does not cover can be devastating to a senior if they have a medical emergency.  “It is always sad to see families experience financial burdens because of a medical disaster, especially knowing it could have been prevented without any additional cost to them,” he added.
