McDonald's franchise model under fire in Europe

Three Italian consumer groups have accused McDonald's of burdening franchisees with exorbitant rents, high royalties and restrictive contracts.

Backed by the Service Employees International Union, Codacons, Movimento Difesa del Cittadino and Cittadinanzattiva filed a complaint with the European Commission asking the regulator to open a formal investigation.

McDonald's has around 6,000 franchise restaurants in Europe.
