More than 50 Black former McDonald’s franchise owners filed suit against the fast-food chain.
The complaint alleges McDonald's steered Black franchisees to stores in inner-city neighborhoods with lower sales volumes and higher security and insurance costs. Further, the franchisees allege they were not given the same support as white franchisees. The plaintiffs are seeking $4 million-$5 million in compensation per store.
McDonald’s officials said in a statement that the company "categorically" denies the allegations and that "we are confident that the facts will show how committed we are to the diversity and equal opportunity of the McDonald’s system, including across our franchisees, suppliers and employees.”
