McCaskill, Senate committee members grill GM CEO

Posted online
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., grilled General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) CEO Mary Barra yesterday on her company’s culture of concealment related to problems with an ignition switch it manufactured that is now tied to 13 deaths.

She wasn’t the only one. Several members of a Senate committee tasked with investigating GM’s recall of 2.6 million cars accused the company of covering up problems with the faulty switch, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Barra said many of the details that the senators were looking for would come out of GM’s internal investigation of the matter, which is expected to be complete in 45 to 60 days.

McCaskill said a culture of concealment had been fostered at the company, and she dismissed Barra’s claim that the culture had changed. The senator from Missouri stated GM had plenty of time to recall cars after it emerged from bankruptcy in 2009.
