Mattel to sell ‘curvy’ Barbie doll

Mattel Inc. (Nasdaq: MAT) is adding a “curvy” model among three new body types for its Barbie line, following years of criticism the doll represents an unrealistic body image.

Barbie, the company’s biggest brand, has fallen on tough times in recent years facing competition from other dolls and toys – realizing a decline in sales of 14 percent in the most recent quarter.

The new body-type variations also include tall and petite, and the line will add different skin tones, outfits and hairstyles, Mattel said in a statement Thursday.
