Marijuana conviction expungements could top $6.5M in Missouri

Posted online

The Missouri Supreme Court has stated that nearly $7 million would be needed to cover costs related to expungements of marijuana-related convictions.

The money would be budgeted if Missourians approve the recreational marijuana legalization ballot measure in November.

The ballot initiative includes an automatic expungement process for people who have past marijuana-related convictions for nonviolent offenses.

The cost of those expungements would all be covered by Amendment 3 tax revenues from the sale of adult use cannabis.

Expunging records will actually save Missourians tax dollars in less than a year. This article is written in such a way that it makes it seem that this hurts the pocketbook of everyday Missourians, but that is simply not the case.

It costs an average of $22,187 to jail one inmate per year. $7million is enough to keep 315.5 people imprisoned. There are certainly way more than 315 people being imprisoned for marijuana in the state of Missouri. After the expungements go through and the people are released, you won't have to spend the $22k every month to jail just one person.

Think of what else we can use that money for: schools, small business grants, infrastructure, etc. We are going to be able to enrich our lives while simultaneously enriching those hurt by harmful marijuana legislation of the past.
