Manoli’s Jewelers winding down after co-owner's death

Posted online

Manoli’s Jewelers is liquidating its inventory after the death of its co-owner late last year.

The Brentwood Shopping Center store, 2700 S. Glenstone Ave., currently is advertising a going-out-of-business sale on its Facebook page.

Co-owner Manoli Savvenas, who previously was a professional wrestler under the nickname The Flying Greek, died Dec. 31. His wife, Valerie, announced the closure in a company Facebook post late last month.

"I can't keep this store going without my other half," Valerie Savvenas said in the video post. "I miss my husband greatly."

The pair moved to Springfield in 1978, and Manoli Savvenas worked doing custom repairs and settings for almost 50 jewelry stores, including Service Merchandise and Zales. He bought a customer’s jewelry store in 1985 and named it Manoli’s. The shop’s been in the same place ever since, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Local filmmaker Jason Brasier recently debuted a documentary on Savvenas called “The Flying Greek."

we will miss Manoli Jewelry. Manoli hand crafted several pieces of jewelry for me and my family including reworking my original wedding rings into a single band w/ the original diamonds. I always get compliments on the pieces he made for me. Valerie is also one of the few appraisers for jewelry in sw Mo. Our state Farm insurance agent has sent many of his customers to her because she has the credentials to back up her appraisel. Our community has suffered a great loss with Manoli's death and Valerie's retirement. But our patients said the same thing when my husband and I retired.
