Suresh Mitta, of Texas, was convicted for his role in a $19 million fraud scheme falsely connecting to Cerner Corp. (Nasdaq: CERN) and hours later he died in the custody of U.S. Marshals.
Mitta was found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a scam in which he and Albert Davis impersonated employees of North Kansas City-based Cerner to sell an MRI worth more than $1 million to Dallas Medical Center. Mitta was facing a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to Kansas City Business Journal.
In addition to posing as Cerner employees, the journal reported the conspirators also created a fake Cerner business entity and bank accounts, and they fabricated price quotes and invoices. The fraud generated millions of dollars investments from physicians and others.
