Man detained for trying to fly drone at White House

Posted online
Members of the Secret Service detained a man Thursday afternoon for trying to fly a drone over the White House fence, according to CNN.

The park on the north side of the property was locked down for a short time while the incident was investigated. Additional details were not available Thursday afternoon.

President Barack Obama was at Camp David at the time of the event, but commented to CNN the incident was “part of a broader problem” regarding management of the new technology.

“There’s a whole range of things we can do with it, but we don’t really have any kind of regulatory structure at all for it,” he said.

This is the second drone-related incident at the White House this year, following a mishap that occurred when a U.S. intelligence agency employee lost control of a drone that crashed on the White House lawn during the early morning hours of Jan. 26. The employee, who admitted he had been drinking while operating the craft, did not know where it had crashed until hearing about the incident on the news and did not face any criminal charges.
