A California man has been arrested and charged for allegedly smuggling greenhouse gases into the United States from Mexico.
Michael Hart has pleaded not guilty to smuggling hydrofluorocarbons and selling them for profit. HFCs are commonly used in air conditioning and refrigeration.
It's the first such prosecution in the United States.
“The illegal smuggling of hydrofluorocarbons, a highly potent greenhouse gas, undermines international efforts to combat climate change,” said David M. Uhlmann, assistant administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “Anyone who seeks to profit from illegal actions that worsen climate change must be held accountable."
