Counterfeit cashier's checks are circulating carrying the name of a Nevada bank, according to a release from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
Metz Banking Co. contacted the FDIC to report the counterfeit checks, which carry the specific routing number of the Vernon County-based bank but look different from traditional cashier's checks. Nevada is roughly 70 miles north of Joplin.
According to the release, the checks have the incorrect address for the bank and do not have the proper built-in security features. Authentic cashier's checks, the release said, are yellow with ornate borders on all sides, along with a padlock icon and vertical security statement embedded in the right border.
The FDIC notes that the appearance of the counterfeit items, which currently are brown with brown print, may be modified over time and encourages all bank employees to know the appearance and security features of authentic checks.
