LULAC's goal is to "encourage and enhance educational attainment, economic and political involvement of the citizens of the community." |ret||ret||tab|
LULAC first began Feb. 17, 1929, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The main purpose of LULAC was to ensure rights for Mexican American citizens. According to LULAC's history, the organization "embodies the will of a people to overcome inequality, discrimination and injustice to claim their rights as U.S. citizens and to access the American dream."|ret||ret||tab|
The Nixa LULAC office is the only one Missouri. Wilcox got involved with the organization about two years ago and added LULAC to her new business location in March. She said between six and eight volunteers are available to help Latin Americans learn about LULAC's role in the community. The center offers free classes on citizenship, housing, health and English as a second language.|ret||ret||tab|
