Orrin Hatch, who had a seven-term career in the U.S. Senate, died Saturday from complications of a stroke. He was 88.
The Utah Republican advised seven presidents, shaped some 12,000 pieces of legislation as a sponsor or co-sponsor and helped to build and hold a conservative majority on the Supreme Court for years.
His 42-year tenure started weeks before Jimmy Carter became president in 1977.
