London Calling Pasty Co. plans to open a stationary kiosk early next year inside a south-side Price Cutter.
The company - a regular vendor known by its red double-decker bus at the SGF Mobile Food Park at 836 N. Glenstone Ave. - is targeting an early February opening for the eatery at the 4228 S. National Ave. grocery store, said London Calling co-owner Neil Gomme.
“We knew we needed to do something on the south side,” Gomme said, noting the company’s separate, traveling mobile food truck has been testing the area. “It was just timing and getting everything set up right.”
For London Calling, the south-side spot represents an extension of an already established relationship with Price Cutter.
Since May, the company has rented the South National Avenue Price Cutter’s commercial kitchen to cook some 250 pasties a day, Gomme said.
London Calling’s Price Cutter kiosk would be similar to Starbucks stations in the local grocery store chain. Gomme said the company he co-owns with Carrie Mitchell would hire around four employees for the eatery, adding to its existing workforce of 13.
Declining to disclose lease rates for the kitchen or the kiosk area, Gomme said London Calling and Price Cutter are working to add up to 20 seats inside the store for the venture.
“When I presented the idea, one of my goals was to make a community place,” he said, noting plans to open another three kiosks in local Price Cutter stores. “Back home for me in England, supermarkets are a community. They have restaurants in every single one of them.”
Gomme said the Price Cutter location would offer a similar menu, which comprises pasties and other British-inspired foods.
