First and Calvary Presbyterian Church

Designed by architect Brandon Dake, AIA, the renovation of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry Street, is an $8.4 million undertaking. DeWitt & Associates is the contractor, and the estimated completion date is fall 2002.

The challenge is to renovate a landmark 1928 neo-Gothic stone church and an addition added in 1952, and to design another addition to complement them both. The site is an entire city block, adjacent to the Southwest Missouri State University campus. The program for the new addition called for classrooms, a fellowship hall and a multipurpose hall.

The design deals primarily with the alignment of the nine different floor levels of the existing four-story church. This problem was resolved through the use of an atrium, which also provides a large gathering space and point of orientation.

Laura Jean Derrick, Architect

Midtown Carnegie Library

Work should be complete this fall on the renovation of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central. Designed by Laura Jean Derrick, AIA, CSI, NCARB, the $700,000 renovation is being handled by general contractor Unified Construction.

The first substantial renovation performed since the library's expansion in the 1920s, restoration became secondary to a new emphasis on accessibility and energy efficiency that was not of concern a century ago. A complaint filed with the Department of Justice has ensured that the public areas, including new restrooms, study rooms and the north entry, are fully accessible.

New, more efficient mechanical units and light fixtures replaced the existing ones. The original 93-year-old clay tile roof has been replaced with new tile by the original manufacturer, and the interior has been completely reworked to emphasize the original oak trim and stained glass.
