The city recorded a 3.7 percent rate for the month, down from 4.3 percent in November and 4.3 percent in December 2004, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development. Greene County's rate also was 3.7 percent, compared to 4.3 percent in November.
Joplin's rate dropped to 4 percent in December from 4.7 percent the month before.
Unemployment rates in both Springfield and Joplin ranked below the U.S. rate of 4.6 percent in December, not seasonally adjusted, down two-tenths of a point from the previous month. Missouri's rate was 5.1 percent.
Springfield added 300 jobs in December, while the Joplin metropolitan area added 1,100 jobs. Each city experienced 2 percent growth for 2005, with 4,300 jobs created in Springfield and 1,800 in Joplin. Overall, the state added 38,300 jobs throughout the year.
Most sectors, other than manufacturing, grew in the Springfield area, with education, health services and government contributing the most new jobs.
