The soft metal lithium was the top-performing commodity of 2021, Quartz reports.
As the electric vehicle market continued to take off, demand for lithium used for their batteries exceeded supply for the first time last year, according to the S&P Global.
That caused the price of lithium to rise by 437% to nearly $43,000 per ton, according to Trading Economics data.
