Letter to the Editor: Volunteers are a lifeline – and more are needed

Posted online

Dear editor,

National Volunteer Week has just come to a close and, across the country, organizations have taken time to celebrate the people who give themselves so generously. At The Victim Center, we are especially grateful for our volunteers. They are often the very first voice of compassion someone hears after they’ve experienced a violent or sexual crime.

Every hour of every day, The Victim Center’s 24/7 hotline is answered by real people. People who need to answer that one call in the middle of the night, on weekends and during holidays; whenever someone needs them most. Our volunteers are the front line of hope and healing. They’re not required to be professionals in the mental health or medical fields. They’re caring, committed members of our community, people like you, who believe that no one should face difficult times alone.

Our hotline is self-referring, which means victims don’t have to go through another agency to get help. They pick up the phone and make the call, which is often the hardest step in receiving help. When that call is answered, a trained volunteer is ready to listen without judgment, to offer resources, and most importantly, to offer human connection. Currently, 70% of our calls occur after office hours and on weekends when volunteers are serving.

And here’s the vital truth: We need more volunteers.

As demand for services continues to grow, so does the need for compassionate individuals willing to serve. Volunteering on the hotline is not easy work, but it is one of the most meaningful volunteer roles a person can do. You may be stepping into someone’s darkest moment and reminding them that they are not alone. This service is life saving and life changing. If you’ve ever wondered how you can make a real, lasting impact on the lives of others, I invite you to consider becoming a volunteer with The Victim Center. We’ll provide all the training and support you need. All we need in return is you and a little of your time. If you are interested in serving, please visit TheVictimCenter.org/volunteer.
