Letter to the Editor: County's merchant license pursuit takes right approach

So ... Greene County Collector Scott Payne thinks that violators of the merchant licensing law shouldn’t be pursued because the return isn’t good enough (“Merchant license letter generates confusion,” Sept. 13, 2004). Great philosophy. How about merchant license collections next year ... and the next ... and the next ... ad infinitum? I’ll concede that there might have been a better way to start the process, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have been done. I think that Mr. Payne needs to re-think his philosophy on running a Greene County office.
