Dear editor,
As a Democrat, I am dismayed by the culture in our state’s Capitol of hyper-partisanship and sexism. After reading the Springfield Business Journal’s profile of Bob Sweere and reading of his intentions to run for state representative, I am convinced Mr. Sweere will only add to these problems. While many in my ilk find his sign messages funny, they are intended to aggravate conservatives and reduce serious issues to mere sound bites. As he notes, there’s only one Democrat state representative from this area. How does he expect to get anything done by expressing the same extreme sentiments he displays outside of his business on a major thoroughfare?
Also, I am curious as to dismissively calling his potential opponent “a gal.” Would he use such language if his challenger was an older male? After enduring years of intern chasing and sexual harassment in the halls of the legislature, Mr. Sweere seems like the same old thing. At least the signs are pointing in that direction.
