Legislators want to halt shrinking airplane seats

A bipartisan bill introduced in the U.S. Senate and House would create a minimum airplane seat width and minimum distance between rows.

Dubbed the SEAT Act of 2017, the proposal would give the Federal Aviation Administration responsibility to set limits.

"Airline passengers are tired of being squeezed," said Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tennessee, who introduced the bill. "Shrinking seat sizes in airplanes isn't just a matter of comfort but the safety and health of passengers as well. Planes need to be capable of rapid evacuation in case of emergency."
