Gov. Jay Nixon last week signed legislation that, among its provisions, secures funding for a new Greene County judge.
The governor signed Senate Bill 100 and House Bill 215, which both have ties to Sen. Bob Dixon, R-Springfield, according to a news release.
SB 100 contains provisions sponsored by Dixon to authorize an additional associate circuit judge, while HB 215, handled by Dixon in the Senate, contains funding for the position, Dixon said.
“Keeping our courts open and administering justice efficiently and effectively are core functions of state government,” he said in the release. "That’s why I’ve worked diligently during the years to make sure the courts in Greene County can meet the demands placed on them, so citizens have their day in court and justice is not delayed.”
SB 100 modifies various provisions related to court proceedings, court costs, surcharges and judicial personnel, while HB 215 strengthens the law related to the criminal justice system, including domestic violence and sexually violent offenses, according to the bills and a news release from Nixon's office.
Calling it a great need, Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association Executive Director Crista Hogan praised the action taken by the state government.
"This is an important day in advancing access to justice in our community," Hogan said in a separate release. "We are grateful for all who have worked toward this goal for several years and especially our local delegation, led by Missouri Sen. Bob Dixon."
