The plant is operated by Parthenon Metal Works, Leggett & Platt’s steel-tubing division, and it manufactures welded steel tubing. Parthenon’s tubing is a component in sofa sleepers, auto parts, lawn and garden equipment, chair legs, barbecue grills and other products.
The operation is scheduled to close in August, and the company said it is exploring several sources of outplacement assistance for displaced production, administrative and management employees.
Leggett & Platt said it is closing the facility because of “excess manufacturing capacity.”
“The decision to close the Carrollton operation is in no way related to the abilities or productivity of the employees at the local facility,” the company said in a news release.
The company said it will pay wages and benefits to eligible employees for at least 60 days from Monday, when the workers were notified of the plant closing.
“The company is exploring several sources of outplacement assistance, including opportunities at other Leggett facilities and job placement services available through outside agencies,” the company said in the release.
Leggett & Platt manufacturers a wide range of products including residential and commercial furnishings, aluminum products, industrial materials and specialized products.
During a monthlong restructuring in September, Leggett & Platt closed or sold 36 facilities and cut 1,000 jobs. The company operates about 300 facilities in more than 20 countries and employs 32,000 people.
