Sunshine and Campbell Intersection Improvements
Designed by The Larkin Group Inc., this project for the city of Springfield was completed in summer 1997. "When Larkin was selected by the City of Springfield in 1995 to address the conditions at Sunshine and Campbell, one of their busiest intersections, we found a traffic engineering nightmare," the company stated. The goals for the project were to provide a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians, to update existing infrastructure facilities, and to enhance the aesthetics of the area. The most important task was to reduce the average wait time for vehicles to 30 seconds or less during the busiest times of the day. These goals were achieved with new driving lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, streetlights, traffic signals and an improved storm sewer system.
Why is this project your legacy? The professionals who make up The Larkin Group Inc. take the mission statement "to improve the quality of life by providing superior engineering services" very seriously. The Sunshine and Campbell intersection improvement represents one of Larkin's most significant efforts toward improving the quality of life for the traveling public in Springfield, now providing nearly 70,000 vehicles per day with a more convenient commute. Together, the city of Springfield, Larkin's engineers, subconsultants and the construction contractors made this improvement happen and the people of Springfield will reap the benefit for years.
