Leawood megachurch plans $90M project

A Kansas-City area megachurch is about to get a lot bigger thanks to a $90 million capital improvement campaign.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal, the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection is raising funds for a new 3,500-seat sanctuary building for roughly $75 million, with most of the balance going toward renovation of existing facilities. The church currently serves about  20,000 members at its 65-acre Leawood location and three other Kansas City-area campuses.

To date, the church has raised about $40 million through early commitments and expects to raise another $20 million through public donations. The remanning $30 million will will be funded through debt financing, KCBJ reports.

Construction is expected to begin in about a year.
