League of Women Voters president stops in Missouri

Posted online
The League of Women Voters of the United States brought its message of public advocacy for voter protection to Missouri the week of Sept. 11. LWV National President Mary G. Wilson traveled throughout the state during the week; her agenda included stops in Kansas City, Columbia and St. Louis, and a joint press conference with Secretary of State Robin Carnahan to address new voting regulations.

Wilson’s Missouri visit is part of the league’s nationwide efforts to educate the public on new election procedures and provide voters with information they need to cast votes and be sure that those votes are counted. Those efforts are part of LWV’s Public Advocacy for Voter Protection project.

“Over the last two years, there has been an alarming increase in new barriers that impede the voting process and impose unnecessary requirements endangering the rights of eligible voters,” Wilson said in a news release. “Our most powerful civic expression is our vote, and I’m in (Missouri) to make sure every voice is heard equally on Election Day.”

Wilson said LWV members at the local, state and national levels are working to maximize voter participation in 2006. League members in Missouri will be distributing Five Things You Need to Know on Election Day cards, in the weeks leading up to the November election. [[In-content Ad]]
