Leading the Charge: Dynamic EVC takes lead with turnkey installation of vehicle chargers

As a U.S. Navy aviation rescue swimmer, John Lorenz spent a lot of time scanning the surface of water, looking for objects or disruptions – anything unexpected.

It’s a habit the 21-year veteran can’t seem to shake, only these days he’s looking for opportunities.

One of the founders of Dynamic EVC LLC, Lorenz believes he has pinpointed a perfect one: installing electric vehicle chargers throughout the region.

“We found a niche nobody else was looking at,” he said.

Lorenz is the owner of L&B Services LLC, a Springfield company that performs directional boring – put simply, crews drill underground holes under existing structures without disturbing what’s on the surface. Lorenz said L&B handles directional boring for City Utilities of Springfield, installing electric, gas and water structures.

Dynamic EVC was formed about two years ago as a division of L&B Services, founded in 2007.

If at first it seemed like a leap, going from drilling holes to installing high-tech car charging stations, it starts to make sense if one pictures chargers being installed in parking lots and garages of shopping centers, car dealerships and apartment buildings, all without disturbing existing infrastructure.

The company has been installing Tesla Superchargers and other charging stations throughout the Show-Me State for two years.

Lorenz partnered with Larry Schmitt and Barry Davis on the venture. Schmitt’s a former Silver Dollar City executive who went on to spend 15 years running go-cart tracks in Branson before retiring, beating Stage 4 cancer and then jumping back into the world of business.

“God had other plans for me, so I’m here today,” he said.

Davis is retired from a 30-plus-year career as a manufacturing engineer at SRC Automotive Inc.

“I’m the strategic guy, John’s the operator, and Barry’s more technical,” Schmitt said, but emphasized Lorenz is the driving force behind the company.

Micah Battaglia is Dynamic’s general manager and comes from a career in the solar energy industry.

Dynamic’s customers
Matt Williams, chief technology officer for Coryell Collaborative Group and director of IT for TLC Properties, said he has contracts with Dynamic EVC for five TLC properties and is in conversations for several others.

“It is definitely trending toward the EV market,” he said. “According to most recent releases, the EV sector passed 5% market share, so it’s absolutely going to become the norm.”

At The Heritage, a mixed-use apartment building going up at Battlefield Road and Fremont Avenue, Dynamic is installing Level 2 chargers for each resident parking space and Level 3 chargers for the retail area.

Last year, TLC introduced a car-share program with a Tesla electric vehicle at its Township 28 property. The company strives to be on the leading edge, Williams said.

“We’re always trying to be,” he said. “Dynamic was able to do it for us.”

According to Williams, EVs are the wave of the future.

“You’re going to be seeing them more and more as the technology gets better,” Williams said. “It’s going to kind of become like an iPod, when nobody has Walkmans anymore.”

Jamie Whiteis, general manager of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. in Branson, had four EV chargers, and Dynamic EVC just added 12 new ones.

Tanger’s corporate office explored energy-savings initiatives in 2022 and in the process set aside capital to add more EVC stations to several of its properties, Whiteis said. Tanger contracted with the charging manufacturer Volta, and Volta made arrangements with Dynamic.

“Definitely, people with electric vehicles are finding us,” Whiteis said. “The concept is, hopefully we can capture you to do a little shopping while your car is charging. When we started in 2014, I was actually kind of surprised at how much use those got.”
