Layoffs coming at UMSL as budget hole grows

The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ budget is expected to come up $15 million short this year, causing a round of layoffs, retirements and the closing of some open positions.

Chancellor Thomas George told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the number of positions to be affected hasn’t been determined. The news comes nearly three months after George announced enrollment dropped off 4 percent at the university.

At the time, the school expected a 2 percent increase to the student body. Now, an additional 2 percent decrease in enrollment is expected for the fall 2016 semester.
