Lawyers don't see big changes for businesses after same-sex ruling

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriages are legal nationwide, are there big challenges on the horizon for businesses? No, but there are a few details worth noting, according to Kansas City-area lawyers who spoke to the Kansas City Business Journal after last Friday’s ruling was announced.

For example, sick-leave policies should be updated to allow same-sex spouses the opportunity to take off for the sickness of a spouse - which is currently allowed under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

While all states must recognize same-sex marriages, companies or religious entities aren’t required to do anything against their religious beliefs. Think of Hobby Lobby, here. That means ministers won’t have to conduct gay marriage ceremonies, but one attorney with Husch Blackwell said it would be interesting to see how things shake out in the future with religious employers and same-sex employees.
