Lawsuit accuses Build-A-Bear of discriminating against blind people

Posted online
A lawsuit filed against St. Louis-based Build-A-Bear Inc. alleges the company's point-of-sale devices discriminate against the blind.

In the suit, Los Angeles County resident Kenneth Smith, who is legally blind, seeks class-action status, alleging card-swipe machines at many of Build-A-Bear’s stores violate the Americans With Disabilities Act and California state law by not being fully accessible and independently usable by people who must read tactilely.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, the key issue is the touch-screen surfaces of the company's point-of-sale devices, which have features the suit claims aren't discernible to people with blindness.
