Last day to register for April election

Posted online
Today is the last day to register to vote for the Greene County April 5 general municipal election.

“Those who are not registered can apply at any one of our many permanent voter registration locations, including schools, libraries, colleges, City Hall and the courthouse,” Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff said in a news release.

Mail-in registrations postmarked March 9 also will be accepted.

A list of registration sites and an application can be found on the county clerk's Web site.

The April election involves nine cities, nine school districts and three fire protection districts.

In Springfield, voters will elect two members to the Springfield School District Board of Education and four members to City Council, and decide whether to enact two possible ordinances.

For the board of education, voters will have five choices: L. Denise Fredrick, Carl Herd, Thomas Prater, Mark Heffington and Don Carriker Jr.

Jim O'Neal is running unopposed for mayor, while the following council candidates are running:
  • Christopher Donegan and Doug Burlison for General Seat C;
  • Thomas Bieker and Fred Ellison for General Seat D;
  • Jan Fisk and Cindy Rushefsky for Zone 2; and
  • Jerry Compton and Stephen Pennington for Zone 3.
Springfield voters will make decisions on possible bans on indoor smoking and alcohol in family theaters.

A sample ballot can be found here.
