More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the welcome home celebration for the Honor Flight of the Ozarks at Springfield-Branson National Airport.
A plane carrying 81 veterans and their guardians will return to Springfield the evening of July 7 after a day-long experience in Washington, D.C.
Food trucks and live music will be part of the welcome. The plane is expected to land as early as 7:30 p.m.
Days after America's 250th anniversary, the airport invited the public to attend the special celebration before, during and after the veterans’ arrival.
“Honor Flight of the Ozarks is committed to taking these heroes to see their memorials in Washington, D.C.,” said David Snider, executive director of Honor Flight of the Ozarks, in a news release. “We honor their bravery, service and sacrifice, with 'One More Mission with Honor.' Many of our veterans did not experience a positive homecoming when they returned from their tours of duty. Our great community changes that and gives these heroes a 'Welcome Home' they truly deserve.”
Honor Flight of the Ozarks was founded in February 2013, and its first flight was in May 2014. Springfield-Branson National Airport has been an integral part of the Honor Flight mission since that time.
The July 7 flight is the second of three Honor Flights scheduled for 2026. An average of 1,500 people greet veterans upon their return.
Dave Schaumburg, director of aviation for the Springfield airport, said in the releasethat the airport is honored to be part of the celebration.
“We’re more than hosts,” he said in the release. “We are partners in ensuring the airport is equipped to support a positive departure and arrival for veterans and guardians. It’s some of the best work Team SGF does all year.”
