Large swath of Okla. included in earthquake-risk report

An update Thursday by the U.S. Geological Survey on the potential risks from man-made earthquakes includes a wide swath of central Oklahoma.

The research follows a sharp rise in the number of earthquakes in the Sooner State that have been linked to wastewater disposal wells utilized by oil and natural gas companies.

USGS researchers identified 17 areas in eight states, including much of central Oklahoma, where induced seismicity rates have moved up. The report includes preliminary models on how to predict where future earthquakes could occur based on recent activity.
