The city of St. Louis' trash pickup department is facing a worker shortage.
The division has 146 full-time positions allocated. There are 30 vacant jobs, and a dozen part-time positions are open.
In response, the department is mixing recycling and trash as a temporary solution.
“Physically, my workforce had no more to give,” Refuse Commissioner Todd Waelterman said. “That is why this week we are mixing these two together.”
