Mike Scott, KY3 Inc. president and general manager, has announced plans to retire effective March 31.
Scott has held the company's leadership position since 1996. He is 53.
"People think I'm crazy, but I think I have the best job in Springfield," Scott said, but noted it has been a lifetime goal to retire early. "It's been a good run here. It's time to make a change."
Scott joined KY3 in January 1990 as an account executive and was promoted to local sales manager later that year. He became general sales manager in 1991 and worked in the role until being named president and general manager.
Scott, who went to college at Missouri State University, said he feels fortunate to have progressed so far in his career without leaving Springfield.
"It's really kind of an anomaly for someone to be able to advance to a position I have without leaving this town," he said.
Scott notified Mishawaka, Ind.-based Schurz Communications Inc., the owner of KY3, of his retirement in September but chose to wait until the new year to announce the move to the public.
After March, Scott will serve in a consulting role for Schurz Communications, primarily overseeing programming acquisition, or the purchase of syndicated television programs.
In his time as general manager, Scott oversaw the construction and move to its current location at 999 W. Sunshine St., the acquisition of KSPR and the creation of two multicast stations - KY3 24/7 and The Ozarks CW. Under his tenure, KSPR became the first local television station to broadcast news in high definition, followed closely by KY3; the stations are the only two to broadcast HD newscasts in the market, according to a news release.
Schurz will conduct an internal search for Scott's replacement, looking for a new general manager within
its properties, which include television and radio stations as well as newspapers, Scott said.
