Jacob leaves for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., on Jan. 11. He will serve as an Army Ranger medic.
“I tried to enlist five years ago, the day after 9/11, and was told to forget it. I was too old,” Jacob said in a news release. “Then, a few months ago, the Army hiked its maximum enlistment age to 42. Obviously the need for soldiers is still there, so off I go.”
Jacob, who joined KY3 in 1995, anchors the station’s 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts Monday through Friday. His notable stories include coverage of the tornado that hit Pierce City in 2003, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast and local victims of 9/11.
“Jerry has been a valuable member of the KY3 family and we will certainly miss him,” KY3 President and General Manager Mike Scott said in the release. “However, I have a great deal of respect for his decision to serve his country.”
