KSMU wins awards for news reporting

Posted online
KSMU-FM, a public radio station based on the campus of Missouri State University, has received three awards for excellence in news reporting in two news competitions.

Missy Shelton, senior governmental affairs producer, received a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

The winning story, which Shelton wrote, edited and recorded, featured a tour of Riverbluff Cave in southwest Greene County and included descriptions of the cave’s physical features and of fossils discovered by lead scientist Matt Forir.

Mike Smith, news director and production coordinator for the station, won first place in the Radio-Features category at the Missouri State Teachers Association’s annual Media Awards competition.

The MSTA competition recognizes outstanding media coverage of education issues. Smith wrote, edited and produced a story on the May 2005 dedication ceremony for MSU’s one-room schoolhouse.

Shelton also received an honorable mention in the competition’s Radio-General Coverage category for a story on distance learning programs.
